Pictures
I recently (a few months ago) purchased a digital camera. I've actually never really owned a good camera, much less any digital camera. I am by no means a photographer, but I though I'd post the few pictures I'm really proud of.

Details
First, the camera. It is a Sony Cyber-shot P50, a slightly older model. The retail price was around $400, but I got the display model at CompUSA for $150. I then purchased a 64MB MemoryStick (it came with a 4 meg card) and a USB cable (was missing in the display model).

The camera is 2.1 megapixels (1600x1200), and has both digital (6x) and optical (3x) zoom. I disabled the digital zoom, since you lose pixels with it. Optical zoom of course is real zoom. With the 64 meg card, I can store about 80 pictures or so.

Batteries
At first, I went through set after set of AA batteries (it takes two). I tried all the newest Duracell and Energizer cells, and nothing would last more than about 30 minutes. I was determined not to buy the so-called Info-Lithium $60 battery pack Sony recommended.

Then I found Rayovac's newest batteries, the Ic3 15-minute charge NiMH batteries. First, a single charge lasts about 5-times as long as alkalines; in a single charge, the batteries have paid for themselves in Alkalines. Second, with the 15-minute charge (the charger has a fan...), these are simply the best batteries I've ever run across.

I have absolutely no affiliation with Rayovac; they simply invented a product that I whole-heartedly recommend.

The Pics
With the details out of the way, here are the pictures I am particularly proud of. On a rare occasion, I run across one that I just can't believe I personally snapped. Usually it becomes my desktop background for a few weeks.

The first one is a building in down-town Atlanta. I don't know the name of the building, but I was stuck in traffic (Atlanta's traffic is second only to LA), and looked up to what I thought would make a great picture. I happened to capture it perfectly within the frame; the linked picture is not modified in any way except for resizing it down.

Also in Atlanta is the so-called King & Queen buildings. I don't know their official names, but it took me several occasions to get a picture of them that I was happy with. They look really cool at night (the tops light up), especially when there are clouds -- but I've yet to take a good picture of them at night. I will keep trying...

One feature my camera has that's neat is Twilight Mode. It's intended for low-light or night-time outdoor pictures, and it does a long exposure. The exposure time depends on how much light is available, but I've seen it take as long as 2 seconds to take a picture.

Obviously you have to hold the camera quite still, though it's really neat when a car drives by while the shutter is open.

One that I thought came out pretty nice was taken in our parking lot. Note that what you see at the bottom reflecting is not the pavement (it confused me, too); rather, it's the roof of my car, which I used to stabalize the camera:

My girlfriend wanted to go take pictures of some trees she saw. I snapped a few, but one particular one stood out as just neat:

Another girlfriend-inspired picture was this one, which I thought came out pretty nice:

This was accidental; I was trying to take a picture of outside the car, only it focused on the window. The effect, however, was pretty cool in my opinion. Note that the effect isn't as nice in the shrunk-down version. Be sure to click this one to see what it's all about.

Finally, I really thought this barn picture came out nicely:

More pictures will be posted soon. Note that none of the above pictures have been modified except for resizing in Paint Shop Pro. If you'd like the original 1600x1200 versions, that'll cost you $1 via PayPal for the whole set. Send mail to j-man at jm4n dot com for more info.
